Volume sets a single limit on how much storage space all users can use while account sets limits on how much storage space each family member can use. In Windows 10, you can set up one of two quotas on your computer’s storage space: volume or account. The good news is, Quota provides a solution. That can lead to headaches, frustration and arguments. Everyone can use as much storage space on your PC or laptop as they want. However, there is one issue with having multiple accounts. Could you imagine sitting down to work at home, for instance, to find someone accidentally deleted your work files? That’s beneficial because no one is messing around with your data. Your spouse, children and grandkids can have their own virtual space on your computer. That way, when you log in, you each have the files, folders, photos and so on that you use every day. In other words, if you have a PC or laptop in your office or family room that anyone can use, you create separate accounts for each user. Overall, though, no one really uses Disk Quotas anymore because hard drives have gotten so large in size. You’ll see an entry for each user on the system and you can edit the limits by user. This is really useful if you have kids or other people using your computer and you want to restrict their hard drive usage, but not your own. It would have been nice if there was a tool to set the space quota for each user across the whole computer, but unfortunately there isn’t.Īlso, if you want to set quota limits on a per user basis, then you have to click on the Quota Entries button. Remember that this is set per hard disk partition, so if you want to limit other drives, you will need to do the same steps above for each drive. You’ll get a warning dialog telling you that it may take a few minutes for Windows to scan the drive so that it can update disk usage statistics.Ĭlick OK and you should see the traffic light turn green once the quota limits have been activated.
